The oculomotor apparatus and binocular function are essential in the prehension of the environment and communication with others through the assessment of the depth, relative distances, and positioning in space that condition the correct and appropriate execution of gestures, movements and displacement for a precise action. However, the treatment of visual information is not exclusive and is associated with, or completed by, information issued from the auditive, vestibular and proprioceptive captors, in a multi sensorial cognitive integration, sometimes neglected in common practice. Orthoptists play an active part in the polysensorial assessment which, other than the oculomotor examination and study of binocular vision, also includes an analysis of the visuovisual and visual-vestibular paths, and the study of the equilibration using specific tests combined into a neuro-sensitive-cognitive ensemble that permits analysis of the capacities of a patient and the oculomotor and perceptive strategies for relating.
