Early failure of the Moje implant when used to treat hallux rigidus: The need for regular surveillance

Background and objectivesArthroplasty for hallux rigidus remains controversial. This study assesses 2–5 year outcomes of the press-fit Moje ceramic–ceramic implant.MethodsTwenty-one joints in 16 patients were reviewed clinically, radiologically and pedobarographically. Nineteen implants were in the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ), one in the 2nd MTPJ and one in the 3rd MTPJ.ResultsDespite good immediate pre-operative radiographs, six implants (29%) required revision at a mean of 26 months after surgery—three for implant fracture, two for loosening and one for persistent pain. A further nine (43%) had radiographic signs of aseptic loosening. Loose implants had been in situ for significantly longer than stable implants, but had no difference in functional or pain scores.ConclusionsThere is an unacceptably high incidence of failure of the press-fit Moje implant and we do not recommend its use. Patients who already have this implant in situ should have regular radiographic surveillance.
