The Babesia bovis VESA1 virulence factor subunit 1b is encoded by the 1β branch of the ves multigene family

We identify the 1β branch of the ves multigene family as the source of the VESA1b subunit, and show that, despite sharing a promoter region, is not coordinated stoichiometrically with VESA1a.
