SS is a more potent stimulus of NT-proBNP release than myocardial ischemia. NT-proBNP reliably distinguishes SS from other forms of shock. SS-related NT-proBNP release appears to involve cardiomyocyte damage but not genuine cardiomyocyte necrosis.
