• The heterogeneous group of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IM) needs international consensus on myopathologic classification.
• Experts agreed on the basic panel of histological muscle biopsy stains necessary for diagnosing the different IM.
• A biopsy stains and drafted a score tool to describe muscle tissue alterations in the IM.
