Giant post-traumatic parotid gland sialocele and fistula: A case report and review of the literature

Parotid gland sialocele is an acquired lesion characterized by accumulation of extravasated saliva around the secreting tissues of salivary glands. It can be caused due to trauma, surgery or infection. In the present paper, a case of post-traumatic parotid gland sialocele in a 20-year-old male patient has been reported. Patient reported with diffuse, large, oval and fluctuant swelling measuring about 6 cm × 5 cm on left side of the face with duration of 10 days. Aspiration of the lesion yields clear watery fluid and on investigation it showed numerous inflammatory cells and high amylase levels (8000 unit/L). The diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical, computed tomography and fine-needle aspiration cytology findings. Repeated aspirations, dressings and antisialogogues were administered for 7 days but the swelling did not resolve significantly. Intra-oral surgical dissection was done along with the closure of the fistula. Histopathological examination of resected specimen revealed a large cystic cavity lined by granulation tissue and containing eosinophilic material interspersed with mucinophages. One-year follow-up showed no evidence of recurrence.
