Paranasal sinus mucormycosis in an immunocompetent host: A rare case report

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection commonly affecting structures in the head and neck, such as air sinuses, orbit and brain. Common predisposing factors includes diabetes mellitus and immunosuppression, but rarely seen in apparently normal individuals. The infection commonly begins in the nose and paranasal sinuses, and can spread to orbital and intracranial structures either by direct invasion or through the blood vessels. We report a case of primary paranasal mucormycosis in a healthy adult with emphasis on the importance of early recognition and aggressive treatment to reduce the mortality and morbidity.
