Post Transplant Diabetes Mellitus in Renal Transplant Recipients

Non-immunologic outcomes after Renal Transplant are receiving increasing attention. Post Transplant Diabetes Mellitus (PTDM) is one of such conditions that can occur from usage of Steriods and Calcineurin inhibitors. PTDM increases the morbidity and mortality and its early detection is important. The incidence of PTDM varies in different parts of the world from 9% to 24% and in some reports it was 46%. In our hospital the incidence of PTDM is 8.1%. Meticulous control of PTDM reduces infection and cardiovascular events significantly. A change in the immunosuppressive protocol may be required. Tacrolimus is considered to be more diabetogenic than Cyclosporine.
