Laparoscopic surgery has significantly changed the practice of gastrointestinal surgical procedures. Virtually the entire gastrointestinal tract is accessible and procedures pertaining to the whole length of the GI tract can be performed by laparoscopy e.g., oesophagectomy for carcinoma, gastric resections and gastro-enteric bypass, small bowel resections and anastomosis, colectomies and anterior resection for rectal carcinoma. However, the most commonly performed laparoscopic surgery of the gastrointestinal tract remains pertaining to the esophageal hiatus. Laparoscopic approach provides excellent access and exposure of the esophageal hiatus, impossible by open surgery. The advantages include bright light and magnified anatomical details for correction of underlying anatomical and functional defects with lessened discomfort, shorter hospitalization and rapid recovery.
