The recognition of the role of insulin resistance in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and the launch of metformin in the U. S., in 1994, followed a few years later by the results of the United Kingdom Diabetes Prospective Study (UKPDS) pushed the drug at the first rank in all countries.
