Prise en charge pragmatique du diabétique en EHPAD

The percentage of residents in nursing homes who have diabetes is estimated to be 20-30%. They are often heavy fragile, polypathological, and sometimes with major cognitive disorders. At this age and in this context, strict control of diabetes is secondary in relation to the prevention of fall hazards, and undernutrition, sarcopenia and cognitive decline, and prevention of acute metabolic accidents. Writing an Individual Care Plan is to set objectives for a given patient, adapt antidiabetic treatment in each case, and specify how to monitor him daily. Based on literature data and professional experience, a multidisciplinary group of French experts offer modalities for managing diabetes appropriate to elderly diabetics in nursing homes, focusing on patient safety.
