Many diabetic patients do not know the meaning of a key test in the monitoring of diabetes, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), does not recognize this test in their laboratory tests' results, and do not know their last value, or its meaning. This study evaluates the impact of a single educational intervention targeting the understanding of this complex concept. A tool has been designed by the medical and pharmaceutical diabetes' unit team at Grenoble University Hospital (France) and used during the stay of patients in the unit. It relies on two specific instruments, constructed and validated (understanding and satisfaction). An evaluation has been carried out by the pharmaceutical team using a questionnaire given at baseline and 48 hours later; 33 diabetic patients were included. This intervention significantly improved patients' knowledge. A randomized controlled trial could be conducted to confirm the usefulness of the educational intervention on behavioral assessment criteria and not just on cognitive ones.
