In addition to abnormalities in urinary albumin excretion, renal failure worsens the prognosis of type 2 diabetics in terms of cardiovascular outcomes. Indeed, even a modest alteration of glomerular filtration independently predicts mortality and cardiovascular events in this context. This cardiovascular risk is proportional to the severity of renal function alteration, being maximal in type 2 diabetic patients under dialysis. Several potential mechanisms contribute to the deleterious cardiovascular effects of renal insufficiency : worsening of traditional risk factors (hypertension and dyslipidemia), left ventricular hypertrophy, anemia, vascular calcifications… It is thus crucial to early identify renal function disturbances in type 2 diabetic patients in order to optimize cardiovascular prevention stategies as soon as possible.
