La mortalité intra-hospitalière des diabétiques en Côte-d'Ivoire

Statistics related to diabetes mortality take into account acute complications mainly. We carried out a retrospective study to analyse cause of death among 2623 diabetic patients hospitalized from 2002 to 2008 inclusive 209 diabetic subjects died. Prevalence rate of death was 8.0%, predominantly in men (sex ratio: 1.4). Mean age at death was 49.0 years (SD: 11.0). Diabetic patients classified as probable type 2 diabetes accounted for 90.9% of death. 79.4% of death occurred in low-income subjects. Moreover 93.8% of patients presented with at least one complication. Septicemia (24.4%) appeared as the predominant cause of death. We think that diabetes-related mortality statistics should take into account both acute and chronic complications.
