Technique d'injection de l'insuline : que font les patients en France ?

An international (16 countries) survey on diabetes treatment's (insulin and exenatide) self-injection technique was conducted in 2009. We describe the main results of the French part of this survey on the 113 adult (> 18 years) diabetic subjects treated with insulin, recruited among the diabetic population from six university hospital diabetes department. Self-administered questionnaires « Patient » (40 questions) and « Healthcare provider » (12 questions) were analyzed and are discussed. Although all patients declared having received an initial education to insulin injection technique, and benefit from a follow-up and regular reminders on the main injection modalities, this survey point out some gaps in patients' knowledge and/or in their practical application, likely susceptible to influence the glycemic control goal achievement or to explain the variability in insulin therapeutic effect. Moreover the survey has shown differences between patients' responses and their nurses' responses on the presence of lipodystrophy at injection areas and in the patient's feeling of pain at injection time.
