Normal Endoanal/Endorectal Ultrasound Anatomy and Technique

The performance of endoanal and endorectal ultrasound requires a solid understanding of basic anorectal and pelvic anatomy. It also requires comfort with the techniques involved. Neither of the aforementioned modalities is easily mastered. However, as with any operator-dependent technology, a solid understanding of the basics coupled with practice can allow the practitioner to eventually add this tool to his or her armamentarium. In this review, the basics of endoanal and endorectal ultrasound anatomy and technique will be reviewed with a focus on rigid ultrasound via the use of a 360° rotating crystal.
