In a standardized study of patients admitted to a hospital for suspected allergy to a βL antibiotic, only 20% were found to be allergic. Physicians and patients understood that for such patients, non-βL antibiotics would be required in the future. Concerning non-βL allergic patients and their physicians, both need a better understanding of their concerns about the possibility of βL allergy when an antibiotic is needed in the future.
