La detección de secuelas tardías entre los supervivientes de distintos procesos oncológicos ha ido aumentando en los últimos años al mejorar los esquemas terapéuticos y conseguirse mayores y más prolongadas tasas de remisión tumoral. Entre las secuelas que pueden aparecer tras la curación de un tumor cabe mencionar la osteoporosis. La pérdida de masa ósea y el riesgo de fracturas aumentan en los pacientes con cáncer. Los factores que favorecen el desarrollo de la osteoporosis en los pacientes cancerosos son numerosos. Algunos guardan relación con el propio tumor y otros con el tratamiento antitumoral. Por ello, conviene plantearse el diagnóstico precoz de osteoporosis en los pacientes con antecedentes oncológicos, con objeto de adoptar las oportunas medidas preventivas.

The detection of late sequelae in survivors of cancer has become increasingly important as developments in diagnostic and therapeutic methods have led to a more and long-term survival rates in tumoral patients. Osteoporosis is one of such problem that has been increasingly identified in patients with cancer. Significant bone loss and increased risk of fractures have been described in these patients. Medical problems associated with the malignancy or caused by the oncologic treatment are the main factors involved in bone loss. Therefore, patients at risk for bone loss should be undergo preventive or therapeutic interventions at an early enough stage to prevent fractures.
