Erythroderma is a clinical syndrome with extensive red skin. Commonly there are systemic manifestations which may be potentially life-threatening. The condition may be due to inflammatory or, more rarely, neoplastic processes. Common causes are eczema, psoriasis and drug eruptions. Because of the dramatic presentation doctors must ensure they are not distracted from a diagnostic process based on careful history-taking and examination. Erythroderma may cause ‘skin failure’ with severe systemic disease requiring supportive care in an intensive care unit. The condition may be fatal without good supportive care. Specific skin therapy will depend on the nature and severity of the underlying cause. Close collaboration between general physicians, intensive care physicians and dermatologists is necessary for successful management.
