ResumenIntroducciónLa función principal del esófago es conducir el bolo alimenticio desde la faringe hasta el estómago. Para que este proceso se lleve a cabo correctamente, es necesario que intervenga un complejo mecanismo neuromuscular que dé como resultado una perfecta formación de ondas peristálticas que, coordinadas con la dinámica esfinteriana (esfínter esofágico superior e inferior), impulsen el bolo alimenticio de forma anterógrada hacia la cavidad gástrica.ObjetivoEl objetivo principal de esta actualización es mostrar los trastornos de la motilidad esofágica más importantes: acalasia, espasmo esofágico difuso, esófago en cascanueces, esfínter esofágico inferior hipertenso y motilidad esofágica ineficaz.MétodoExponer las manifestaciones clínicas y las herramientas diagnósticas y terapéuticas que existen hoy en día para su abordaje, poniendo especial atención en las diferentes técnicas manométricas (convencional y de alta resolución) de las que disponemos para la identificación de estos trastornos y su valor a la hora de elegir el tratamiento óptimo en cada caso.
