Various complementary tests are employed in the differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, and they can be grouped into several levels according to their accessibility, objectives and complexity. Level I (basic studies) includes tests that should be routinely requested. Level II tests (complementary studies) are those employed in cases of cognitive impairment with atypical presentation. Level III tests (specific studies) are those that should be used to confirm a specific clinical suspicion. Level IV tests (clinical research studies) are those reserved for research or highly specialized centers.
