Insulinoma

Spontaneous hypoglycemia is rare. However, in healthy individuals with recurrent symptoms of spontaneous hypoglycemia, an insulinoma should be suspected. Patients with an insulinoma typically present with neuroglycopenic symptoms and are commonly misdiagnosed as having a psychiatric or neurologic disorder. The hallmark of these tumors is random hypoglycemia (not reactive) with inappropriately elevated endogenous insulin levels. We report the case of a 44-year-old female with an insulinoma. We will then review the current recommendations for the diagnosis and management of these rare tumors.
