RETINOPATÍA DIABÉTICA DESDE LA PREVENCIÓN. INTEGRAR LA PESQUISA EN LOS CENTROS DE DIABETES

RESUMENLa retinopatía diabética (RD) es la principal causa de ceguera en personas en edad productiva. La ceguera puede reducirse significativamente si la RD es detectada y tratada de manera oportuna por lo que el screening de la RD juega un rol crucial en prevenir la ceguera; sin embargo, las tasas de cumplimiento de tamizaje están por debajo de lo recomendado. Dado que las intervenciones que mejoran la infraestructura del sistema de salud y sus procesos han logrado aumentar significativamente las tasas de pesquiza precoz retinal, puede ser posible que al integrar el tamizaje de RD usando imágenes retinales digitales dentro del modelo de cuidado crónico de diabetes, se pueda proporcionar un mejor servicio y cuidados a los pacientes con diabetes. Además, este modelo podría proporcionar más valor no sólo a personas con diabetes, sino también a los profesionales que participan en su cuidado y al sistema de salud.El propósito de este artículo es responder la pregunta acerca de si existe evidencia que apoye o no la integración de un modelo alternativo de screening de RD dentro del modelo de cuidados crónicos (MCC) para manejar personas con DM.

SUMMARYDiabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness for people in their productive years. Blindness can be significantly reduced if DR is detected and treated in early stages. Therefore, screening of DR plays a pivotal role in preventing blindness; however, compliance rates of DR screening are below recommended standards. Given that interventions that improve health care system infrastructure and processes have shown to achieve a significant increase in retinal screening rates, it may be possible that by integrating the screening of DR using digital retinal images into the chronic care model of diabetes, better services and care could be provided for patients. In addition, this model could provide more value not only for people with diabetes, but also for healthcare providers and for the healthcare system.The aim of this article is to answer the question whether there is enough evidence to support the integration of a diabetic retinopathy screening model within the diabetic chronic care model (CCM).
