ResumenLa artrosis es una enfermedad multifactorial de etiología incierta que afecta el cartílago de las articulaciones diartrodiales. Es una condición común afectando al menos a un 30% de los individuos adultos. Como consecuencia de la artrosis se afecta la biomecánica de las articulaciones lo que termina en dolor, disminución de la movilidad y deformidad. Muchos factores juegan un rol en la patogenia de esta condición, incluyendo la edad, factores genéticos, inflamación, trauma, obesidad y otros, los cuales en una compleja interacción entre ellos, contribuyen a alterar la estructura del cartílago, el hueso subcondral y la membrana sinovial, llevando a los cambios macroscópicos que caracterizan a la artrosis. Comprender los mecanismos patogénicos de la enfermedad podría ayudar a desarrollar terapias para esta condición común y a menudo inhabilitante.

SummaryOsteoarthritis (OA) is a multifactorial disease of unclear etiology that affects cartilage of diathrodial joints. It is a very common disorder affecting at least 30% of elderly people. As a result of OA the biomechanics of the joints is affected ending up in pain, decrease mobility and deformity.
