Realidad actual de las epilepsias en chile y latinoamérica

ResumenLas epilepsias afectan en Latinoamérica (LA) entre 2.886.000 a 4.617.000 personas, pero solo una minoría tiene acceso a diagnóstico y tratamiento adecuados. Debido a que gran parte de la población depende de los servicios públicos de salud, los países tienen una baja inversión “per capita” en salud en general y en epilepsias en particular. Sin embargo esta realidad puede cambiar, ya que la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) en septiembre de 2011 aprobó la “Estrategia y Plan de acción sobre la Epilepsia” para las Américas. Este tiene por objetivo que los gobiernos, apoyen la formación de programas nacionales y legislaciones en epilepsia, y los países que ya los tengan las puedan perfeccionar, además de acciones que lleven a mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes, permitiendo una integración social plena y romper el estigma asociado a las epilepsias. SummaryIn Latin America (LA) there are between 2.886.000 to 4.617.000 people with epilepsy, many of them without optimum treatment or simply with no access to treatment, because they depend on the national health system, where usually there is a low investment in health and specifically in epilepsy. Fortunately, this reality could change because in September 2011 the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) approved the “Strategy and Plan of Action for Epilepsy” for the Americas. This plan of action’s aim is that the governments support the creation of national programs and legislations about epilepsy, and improve those that already exist. In addition to actions that allow them to improve their all round quality of life, so that they can be socially integrated and break down the associated stigma that comes with a diagnosis of epilepsy. This text shows the reality of the epilepsy in LA and Chile.
