En una primera etapa su función era más bien aislada y cercana a los círculos religiosos o de poder.Posteriormente en la Edad Media surgen los primeros Hospitales para acoger a los soldados y peregrinos que iban a Tierra Santa y la administración de ellos era compartida entre sacerdotes y médicos.Luego los médicos asumen el control de los Hospitales, desplazando a los clérigos y haciéndose cargo de la gestión de dichos centros, hasta que la complejidad de la medicina y los cambios epidemiológicos hicieron necesaria la participación de expertos en finanzas y administración.Todo esto en un entorno complejo de pugnas entre médicos, pacientes y administradores, lo que conspira contra de la eficiencia y la efcacia de la actividad clínica.Como un puente entre esos mundos diferentes, surgen médicos con formación en gestión.
