Aspectos éticos de iaatención deladolescente

ResumenQuerámoslo o no los adolescentes nos observan, nos juzgan… y nos necesitan. La relación médico-paciente adolescente presenta una oportunidad única para ayudar a los jóvenes a reflexionar acerca de las circunstancias que confrontan y los correspondientes problemas morales que se les presentan a diario. El proceso de maduración de los adolescentes incluye la elaboración de su propio sistema de valores y esto puede ser apoyado por el clínico que sabe escuchar y sabe preguntar. Los jóvenes entonces descubren que el médico no solamente posee su habilidad profesional, sino también puede ser un modelo de ser humano. Este artículo describe casos concretos de nuestros consultorios y salas de internación y como entroncan con la teoría ética. Propone que así como los pediatras deben saber y dedicarse a monitorear el crecimiento y desarrollo de sus pacientes adolescentes, deben del mismo modo sentirse confortables cuando surge el tema del crecimiento moral de sus pacientes.

The physician –adolescent patient relationship offers a unique opportunity to help young people reflect about the circumstances they have to confront and the corresponding moral choices they face in everyday life. Adolescent maturation involves the development of ones own value system, and that can be given support by clinicians who know how to listen and what questions to ask. Young people then learn that the doctor not only posseses professional knowledge, but can also serve as a role model for a human being. This article describes real cases from our offices and inpatient units and places them in the context of ethical theory. It proposes that the same way a pediatrician needs to monitor a child’s growth and development; he/she should feel equally comfortable when the subject of the moral growth of their patients comes up.
