Se conoce como gangrena de Fournier a la fascitis necrosante que afecta a la región perineogenital. Es un cuadro poco frecuente, pero con un índice de mortalidad alto. Su incidencia es mayor en pacientes varones de mediana edad con factores predisponentes, como la diabetes mellitus y el alcoholismo crónico. Suele aparecer como complicación de una enfermedad perirrectal o urogenital que no ha sido correctamente tratada.El diagnóstico de esta entidad es fundamentalmente clínico y el tratamiento debe ser precoz para mejorar el pronóstico; en él se incluyen: antibióticos de amplio espectro, desbridamiento quirúrgico precoz y agresivo y soporte vital de mantenimiento. Se trata de una patología grave que debe ser derivada de forma urgente al hospital.

Fournier's gangrene is the term applied to necrotizing fascitis affecting the perineal-genital area. It is an uncommon condition with a high mortality rate. It is more frequent in male and middle aged patients with predisposing factors like diabetes mellitus and chronic alcohol consumption. It arises from perirectal or urologic abscess that has not been correctly treated.Diagnosis of this entity is basically clinical and treatment should be prompt in order to improve the prognosis. This includes broad spectrum antibiotics, early and aggressive surgical debridement and intensive care. Since it remains a surgical emergency, patients should be referred to the hospital for adequate management.
