Control of blood flow to tissues is vital to maintaining adequate but not excessive nutrient supply and removal of waste products. There are a variety of interacting mechanisms which exist within the various levels of the vascular system to achieve this control. This article provides a description of the key aspects of this process including structural features, mechanisms of autoregulation and the fundamental roles of the endothelium and vascular smooth muscle.
