Open resection for colorectal cancer

In the UK open colorectal surgery is becoming less frequent in many centres where laparoscopic colorectal resection is being offered to most patients. However, the principles governing surgery for colorectal cancers remain the same in both modalities of treatment. The purpose of this article is to give the reader an overview of the types of operation used and the factors that are considered in approaching open colorectal cancer resections.
