A sound understanding of the management of bone and tissue sarcomas is of value in providing a broader introduction to some of the key principles of oncological surgery. The life expectancy and quality of life of patients with sarcomas have improved significantly. This has been as a result of the development of multidisciplinary teams which include surgeons, radiologists and oncologists. These teams are based on regional centres and working together can achieve a cure in the majority of patients. This article aims to give readers an overview of the steps required in the management of bone and soft-tissue sarcomas. The principles discussed are of diagnosis, staging and treatment. It is essential to remember that sarcomas are rare and the management should ultimately be performed in dedicated regional centres. However a sound understanding of this management enables prompt and accurate referral to an appropriate centre.
