Dupuytren's disease

Dupuytrens disease is a common condition of the hand found in mature individuals, usually of Northern European extraction. It causes functional impairment through the development of flexion contractures of the fingers, generally on the ulnar side of the hand. Its cause is disputed, but is now thought to have a genetic origin. Surgery is used to relieve deformity and restore function, cure is not anticipated and recurrence is common. Multiple surgical techniques are described and the precise surgical strategy needs to be tailored to the individual patient. Postoperative rehabilitation and patient engagement are required for good results.
