Fractures of the pelvic ring

The management of injuries to the pelvic ring is changing as new techniques are developed for acute resuscitation and definitive management. Patients with pelvic fractures who present with hypovolaemic shock require emergency resuscitation and temporary stabilization of their injuries using pelvic binding: speedy intervention saves lives. The early role of damage-control peri-pelvic packing and embolization are being defined. Angiography depends primarily on available equipment and expertise. Definitive fixation requires assessment by CT, accurate reduction and fixation. Percutaneous image-guided techniques are becoming important tools in the fixation of these injuries.
