Care and basic monitoring of the anaesthetized patient

The physiological effects of sedative, hypnotic and anaesthetic drugs dictate that clinicians must assume the care and monitoring of many vital protective functions. In addition to assuring adequate tissue perfusion and oxygenation, care of the sedated or anaesthetized patient includes maintenance of acid–base balance and temperature, preservation of dignity and confidentiality, protection against accidental injury and avoidance of drug administration errors.
