Prostate cancer is the second commonest cause of cancer-related death in UK males. Age is the most important predisposing factor, with an increasing incidence of cancer with age. In this review, the authors explain the natural history of prostate cancer and describe the numerous therapies used to combat the disease. Prostate cancer is initially investigated by digital rectal examination and serum prostate-specific antigen test. Recent developments have led to a wide variety of treatment options that can confuse patients and junior doctors. The authors give an overview of prostate cancer that will give answers to the commonest questions. From the former ‘gold standard’ radical retropubic prostatectomy to the novel cryotherapy, each therapy is explained concisely and clearly. This contribution also describes the management of localized and advanced disease. It is hoped that this information allows surgical trainees to confidently and competently treat patients with prostate cancer.
