Surgical treatment of colorectal cancer

Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for colorectal cancer. A multidisciplinary team (diagnostic radiologists, histopathologists, oncologists, colorectal nurses) is required for the optimal management of this condition. This multidisciplinary approach has resulted in improved survival after elective surgery. Low rectal anastomosis and laparoscopic resection have the potential to reduce morbidity after surgery. Emergency presentation remains a major cause of early morbidity and mortality. Avoiding emergency surgery, through pre-symptomatic diagnosis or by interim relief of obstruction through endoluminal stenting, can deliver a further substantial reduction in morbidity and mortality from this disease.
