Temperature regulation

The control of body temperature is poorly understood. Derangements in body temperature are common, and can be a consequence of, or result in, severe disease, yet on other occasions may be therapeutic. Patients undergoing surgery are at particular risk of hypothermia, and this contribution reviews the principal means by which heat is lost. The pathophysiology of hyperthermia, the regulation of temperature and its clinical measurement are also discussed.
