Transplant immunology II: overcoming acute and chronic rejection

The major strategies in overcoming acute and chronic rejection are to minimize immune activation, to reduce the number of T-cells in the recipient, to prevent activation and proliferation of T-cells, and to suppress inflammation. The ultimate achievement is long-term acceptance of the graft without the need for continued immunosuppression i.e. immunological tolerance of the graft.
