• PEG coated magnetic nanoparticles as cost effective heterogeneous catalyst for CH activation.
• Oxidative cyanation of tertiary amines.
• Environmentally benign oxidative methodology using H2O2 as oxidant.
• Facile recovery of the catalyst by external magnet.
• Efficient recycling of the catalyst for several runs with consistent activity.

An efficient, cost effective and environmental friendly PEGylated magnetic nanoparticle catalyzed oxidative cyanation via CH activation of tertiary amines to corresponding α-aminonitriles using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and sodium cyanide as cyanide source is described. The synthesized nanocatalyst was easily recovered with the help of external magnet and was successfully reused for several runs without any significant loss in catalytic activity.
