Effective one-step reduction of Pt/alumina–carbon catalysts for asymmetric hydrogenation of α-ketoesters

• 15%alumina–carbon supported Pt catalysts were reduced by different methods.
• No chlorine residuals on the catalyst which was directly reduced by 600 °C.
• One-step reduction method was favorable for catalytic performance of the catalyst.
• Pt/15%alumina–carbon can be reused for 23 times without distinct loss in activity.
