► The relationship between the NST and TAL receive support from immunochemical studies. ► Intermediate NST-lesions impair concurrent TAL dependent on the vagal system. ► The same iNST lesions did not interrupt the development of sequential TAL. ► These results suggest a functional dissociation between the neural systems underlying concurrent and sequential TAL.
