Understanding counterfactuals in discourse modulates ERP and oscillatory gamma rhythms in the EEG

► We explored counterfactual (“If Mary had won the lottery….”) meaning using EEG. ► Counterfactuals modulated N400 waves indicating an increase of processing load. ► They also reduced gamma power at frontal sites indicating their unification cost.
