An ERP investigation into the strategic regulation of the fluency heuristic during recognition memory

► We examined neural activity due to attribution of perceptual fluency in recognition. ► We manipulated fluency attribution by varying the sensory modality of the study list. ► Repetition priming decreased positive recognition responses after auditory study. ► Priming also led to late, frontal positive ERPs following auditory study. ► Late frontal positivity might reflect discounting of fluency during recognition.
