On the dynamic behaviour of the “click” mechanism in dipteran flight

► A more accurate model to the insect flight motor is proposed. ► Dynamic behaviour of this model with linear or quadratic damping is investigated. ► Efficiency of the mechanism is compared for different damped systems. ► The non-resonant “click” mechanism with quadratic damping has distinct advantages.
