Inter-plant variability in maize crops grown under contrasting N × stand density combinations: Links between development, growth and kernel set

► N stress delayed reproductive development. ► Spikelet growth rate during the critical period was a useful variable for predicting kernel set. ► Reduced reproductive efficiency of the intolerant hybrid under N stress was due to kernel abortion. ► This trend predominated among dominated plants.
