Gender expression and inflorescence structure of Pappea capensis Eckl. and Zeyh. (Sapindaceae)

► Pappea capensis (Sapindaceae), previously regarded as dioecious, has been found to be monoecious. Trees flower for up to 3 months, starting with male flowers and end up with female flowers. Young trees tend to be more male and older trees more female. ► Male and female flowers are borne either on the same inflorescence or on separate male and female inflorescences. The inflorescence is a reduced thyrse. ► Either or both low night temperatures and short day lengths trigger the switch from the male to female phase.
