Implementation of Ballast Water Management Plan in Ships Through Ballast Water Exchange System

In this paper, sequential method has applied for ballast water exchange of ships. Moreover, a model has been developed in Maxsurf to carry out the sequential method. The sequential method is a process by which a ballast tank intended for the carriage of ballast water is first emptied and then refilled with replacement ballast water to achieve at least 95% volumetric exchange. At first, the sequence is to be divided into several steps. Each step represents emptying or refilling one tank or pair of tanks and is to be run as any other loading condition on the loading computer. It should be observed that heel and trim shall not be exceeded one degree. At every step exchanging of ballast water should comply the minimum GM (Metacentric Height) and Non-Visible length which has been referred in the stability manual. Actual values of sheer force and bending moment shall always be within the allowable range as indicated in loading manual. Besides this, Forward and Aft draft and time required for Ballasting/ De-Ballasting of water also have been determined. However, the aim of this paper is to provide safe and effective procedure for the Ballast Water Exchange.
