Drivers and limitations for the successful development and functioning of EIPs (eco-industrial parks): A literature review

Within recent times EIPs (eco-industrial parks) have been touted as one approach through which companies can network to reduce their waste, recover value and achieve economies of scale in their production processes. Using a literature review this study undertakes an assessment of EIPs. The review covers their conceptual grounding, development and analyses their major advantages and disadvantages. Whilst there are substantial economic and environmental benefits to be had, there are also several inherent limitations that first have to be overcome. Recommendations for improving their successful development and long-term viability are suggested towards the end of the paper.
