Rising household diesel consumption in the United States: A cause for concern? Evidence on asymmetric pricing

► We check for asymmetry of pricing in the U.S. retail gasoline and diesel markets. ► There has been little work on U.S. diesel pricing due to the low share of diesel cars. ► The threshold cointegration technique of Hansen and Seo (2002) was used. ► Gasoline is priced symmetrically but diesel has been priced asymmetrically since 2008. ► This could be due to refining cost increases from switching to ULSD by 2010.
