Social norms and trust among strangers

► We study an infinitely repeated trust game with randomly matched anonymous players. ► We examine the conditions to sustain the contagious equilibrium. ► It is necessary to have a high outside option for investors. ► The equilibrium supports trust unless it contributes nothing to investorsʼ payoffs.
